This year, at the age of 67, I finally made the symbolic connection in our faith between the manger (in French, to eat; also the wooden trough the barn animals ate from where the Christ child was laying) and the symbols of communion (John 6:54): "He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day..." At my church, Christmas eve the teenagers contributed a dialogue stating that eternal life does not start afterlife, but is now and forever. A way in a manger.
