Floral Day

I live about sixteen miles from the Pacific Ocean as the crow flies. But due to the mountainous terrain it takes about forty five minutes to an hour to drive there. On Saturday Lenore and I made a leisurely drive over to the coast and had lunch at Sea Pal down in the harbor. They have some of the best fish and chips on the coast as well as harbor side seating to watch the seals and the fishing boats going in and out. Following lunch we headed down to the village of Mendocino. Lenore hit some of her favorite spots as we wandered around town. With the foggy weather it was perfect for photographing flowers so I took out my camera and macro lens and focused on the abundant flowers to be found. The coastal climate allows for a wide variety of flowers to be grown. One Cool Cricket

While getting ready to vacuum the living room I spied a little critter crawling on the carpet. It was a Mormon cricket (Anabrus simplex). It was a female as shown by its long ovipositor which should not be confused with a stinger. It is used for laying her eggs down deep in the soil. I took it upstairs and photographed it on the Christmas green background with my macro lens before setting it free in the forest. Waiting for the Sunrise Silhouette

One more installment on the sunrise silhouette series. So far I have a fly, scorpion and today a bark beetle. I wonder what I can think of next? We have been working on stacking wood for the winter so you never know what we might find that I can use. Maybe a tiny salamander? Who knows? So many questions! On the Hunt

I love to create silhouettes. Among my favorites are trees against sunrises or sunsets. On a much, much smaller scale I love to do little creatures as well. Sunday morning I got the idea to do a scorpion. First stop was to the woodpile to find a scorpion which didn't take too long. Next I grabbed a nice rock from the backyard and got to work using a macro lens on a tripod. I took quite a few images to get one that I felt looked right. This was fun image to create! We are off to a good start for the week.
