Stroll Along the Promenade

We went to Torrevieja, Spain last summer on vacation. It was really nice to stroll along the promenade in the late evening. It was cooler then though by no means cold as it was still often quite warm enough to wear a T -shirt. I usually brought along my camera and photographed things that caught my interest as we walked. This meant that I usually was slowing everyone up even more than our normal slow pace. One afternoon we had a squall hit that lasted well into the evening producing bigger waves than normal. This swimmers ladder caught my eye and I lay down on the wooden stairs leading down to it. I braced the camera flat on the ground for a long exposure of one full second. Orion Rising

I was up this morning way,way before the sun rise. I was doing some star photography and I wanted to capture the constellation Orion coming up over the Mendocino Range and the Little Lake Valley. I created quite a few images but this one was my favorite. For those of you that don't know Orion's Belt is that row of three bright stars in the lower right bottom of the frame. The camera was supported on a Gorilla Pod on our window sill.

Out Into the Darkness

Saturday afternoon we went out to the coast and hung out around the Mendocino Headlands watching the sun go down. We had a fantastic tail gate dinner of clam chowder, olives and Camenbert Cheese. We counted so many Gray Whale spouts that I lost count. Right now they are migrating north to Alaska. Such a pretty cool sight to see. The sunrise ended pretty quickly in a fog bank so we headed up the coast to where we were staying at Pudding Creek north of Fort Bragg. We walked out onto the Pudding Creek Trestle in the fading light and created one image of the rocks off shore. We went back to our room watched an old western movie with Jimmy Stuart and drifted off to sleep. Around midnight the dog decided it would be a great time to go to the bathroom. I plodded out into the darkness and worked on an image of the rocks and the beach. The dog really put me into a mood when he wanted to go out at four a.m. I grabbed my camera again and this time made an image of the water shining with the silvery light of the moon. The first image was created by bracing the camera against the trestle railing for a long exposure. The other two were taken on a Manfrotto 190 PROXB Tripod with a Manfrotto 3055 ballhead. Cast a Little Light on It

I haven't posted any blog entries for the past few days as we were on a short trip to Chico, CA. It was nice to be over in the Central Valley enjoying the heat. One evening we ventured out for some frozen yogurt. While I was waiting for Lenore and Annika to finish eating their yogurt I began photographing the cars going by the yogurt place. All of the images I was creating were coming out OK. Just as we were standing up to leave I noticed a bicycle taxi coming down the street with some bright blue flashing lights. Very quickly I ran back to the bench where we were sitting and recomposed an image. I clicked the shutter and waited for the little taxi to go by. I just love the blue light streaks from the taxi. Thank You Lord for the Rain

This morning I made it down to the creek. It had a nice steady flow from the rains and was running fairly clear. Yesterday it probably was a little murky so today worked out much better. The lighting was great with a lot of clouds overhead just perfect for some long exposures. I really enjoyed myself. Here are some images of the upper reaches of Willits creek. Stars Come Out At night

This evening we drove down to Redwood Valley in celebration of Lenore's birthday.( Happy Birthday Lenore my Love!) We went to Marios for some Italian food. It was delicious. On the trip home we pulled off the highway onto one of the really wide pull outs so I could photograph the night sky. It was really hard to time my images between cars. Luckily we are far enough north on 101 that we don't get a horrendous amount of traffic and I was able to get a few thirty second long exposures in. Coming Home

Last night was one of those moments when I was in the right place at the right time and I was able to think quickly on my feet. I walked out to photograph the sunset and after I had finished I was walking back to the house and I thought, "Wow, the house looks pretty nice in that soft evening light". Seconds later I was photographing the house when I heard Lenore coming home from work. I made a quick decision and I waited until her headlights were past me before I tripped the shutter. The long exposure allowed the camera to record the cars taillights as it pulled into the driveway. I just love how this image turned out. I praise you Lord for blessing me with a wonderful family and a warm place to sleep at night. chris

Rocks of La Jolla

On one of my mornings in Southern California I got up bright and early to create some images of some of the rocks in the cove at La Jolla. Hoping for a pink lovely sunrise instead I got fog. Which was fine because it just created more of a dark mood in the images I wanted to make. I placed my camera on a tripod for some long exposures to blur out the motion of the waves and water.
