Waiting for Spring

No gardening until spring! Last night we had a a dusting of snow. When I was photographing birds this morning I kept passing by these garden clogs on the deck rail and they really caught my eye. I finally gave into them and went back inside and grabbed shorter lens that would be more appropriate to photograph them with. Underneath that layer of snow and ice they hold the promise and warmth of the coming spring. Waiting

We cleaned out the ice machine in the fridge today. Now just waiting and watching the ice melt. We are waiting for spring with it's renewal of life. Yesterday I heard my first bird calling to defend its nesting territory. It was music to my ears. I know there will probably many rains yet to come but it was the first bird song of spring that I have heard. I put my trust in other signs I have been given as well in the new life I have that is yet to come. Last of the Ice and Frost

Just finishing up the last of the frost and ice images from last week. Warmer weather is slowly melting away the ice and snow. These images were created along Willits Creek in one of the coldest areas close to where I live. It is almost always five to ten degrees cooler here than the surrounding area. It's in a valley full of trees with little sun to warm it up. It is a good area for photographing frost even after other areas have melted. Gloves and a hat are required! Nature Hike

Last Saturday Annika and several of her friends needed to go to Ukiah, CA to take the SAT Test. We had a small snowstorm on Friday and then it rained turning the roads into an icy mess. I offered to drive everyone down in my pick up because it has four wheel drive. The drive down was gorgeous with partly cloudy skies and an amazing sunrise. I handed Annika the camera and she took a nice photograph of it through the windshield as we were driving. After I dropped the kids off for testing I had four hours to myself. Luckily Ukiah abounds in natural areas and parks all a close distance to the city. As for me I chose to park right across the street at Low Gap Park. I grabbed my camera and one lens and went or a giant looping nature walk up the creek. I found plenty of subjects to keep myself busy. After my hike I drove a few miles up Low Gap road looking at the sights before I turned back to pick up the test takers and headed home. Playing With Ice

Today was limited to indoor activities due to the pouring rain. I made a quick run outside during a break in the rain drops to grab an oak leaf. I tossed the leaf into a cake pan and froze it into a block of ice in the freezer. Later I took the block of ice and set it up onto the window ledge to photograph. A Little Ice and Frost

Yesterday it spit rain and snow off and on all day. Today the dawn came clear and cold. Perfect conditions for frost and frozen puddles. Lenore and I went for a short walk along Willits Creek and there was plenty of subject matter to create images from. Afterwards I found a few more things to look at with my camera in the back yard.
