Random Images From Yesterday

One thing it's nice to have handy is a camera. Cell phones have become part of daily life. They are handy for so many things. Checking with your spouse or partner, "Is this the odd looking fruit that you wanted me to buy?" They are also great for documenting a fender bender or capturing that great recipe that you want to try.Cell phones are handy for photographing friends and family. The list is practically endless. I still haven't gotten used to using the camera on my cell phone just because I'm so used to using a regular camera. That's not to say I don't use my cell phone as a camera it's just that I still prefer to use my DSLR for the vast majority of the images I create. That being said I almost always have a camera nearby. Yesterday I looked out at the clearing fog,I ran and grabbed my camera and captured an image of one of my favorite trees a tall broken Redwood in the Little Lake Valley below. Later on in the evening I passed by a dead leaf that I've been saving for an image. I created a set up and photographed it. My bubble mix was nearby and I thought I'd try out a new idea for some bubble photography. The idea failed miserably by the way. Afterwards I photographed a few soap bubbles and I really liked this one.There you have it. Some random images from my day. Thanksgiving Leftover

This afternoon when I was cleaning up I found some left over Big Leaf Maple leaves that had been used to decorate our Thanksgiving table. Shield Bug Silhouette

I captured a shield bug/beetle off of the screen of a window in our front yard. I thought it would look cool in silhouette on a leaf. Tonight I set it up with a leaf and a lamp in the studio before I set it free out in the front yard. Inside Kind of Day

Today is the perfect day to sit inside by the woodstove and read a book. The rain is coming down pretty hard right now. Earlier I grabbed a bark beetle and placed it on a dead leaf on our window sill in some soft warm light. I really liked how the leaf veins and the beetle all came together. Remains of the Rain

Yesterday morning I went out to restock the bird feeder in the back yard. A flock of Band-tailed Pigeons took off from a fir tree into the grey cloudy skies as I turned the corner into the backyard. They were a beautiful sight to see. After restocking the feeder I turned and went back to the house. Whle I was stepping in the door I looked down to see a single Madrone leaf with one drop of water sitting on it from last nights rain. That looks pretty cool I thought to myself. I went inside and grabbed my camera and a macro lens. I dragged a nearby bench and used it to brace myself as I focused and photographed the leaf. No Bird Day

Last night I created a new set up for the birds in the backyard. This morning after sitting in the photoblind for a long time there were very few birds to be seen. Even the hummingbirds were reluctant to use their feeders. First thing I did was to capture the blasted cat when I saw her and put her into the house. That resulted in the minor improvement of one bird coming to the bird feeder but not to the nice perch I had set up for it. After that nothing. Then the fog rolled in which is usually a good thing. Still no birds. Possibly there is a hawk hanging around up in the trees? I went over to my Mom's house and stacked some wood for her and on the return trip I stopped and photographed a young first year Blacktail Deer in nice light on the forests edge. Then I took a walk down our road photographing the forest and later on a leaf. It's still foggy and there aren't any birds calling. It's a good day to sit by the fire and read a book. Reflection

This morning both Lenore and I were up before sunrise. I must say that with the shortening days that is much easier to accomplish. We went for a walk and then I grabbed my camera and tripod and went and photographed a leaf in the pond in our backyard. I just loved the light coming through and the mirrored reflection on the water. My thanks to Karolina Fonseca Moreira for the image idea. Small Secret World

I'm always amazed at the cool and unique things that you can find on the forest floor. It's like there is a secret little world apart from our own right at our feet. As adults we don't spend enough time marveling at God's handiwork at ground level. As children we often spent time crawling around on the ground looking at everything and being fascinated by plants, bugs the rocks and the dirt. The taller we get the more removed from that little world we seem to get. While visiting Little Darby Environmental Education Area east of Willits yesterday Lenore picked up these great clear leaves for me. They are amazing in that they have slowly decomposed to where only the vein structure is holding them together. They are really small beautiful world unto themselves. Playing With Ice

Today was limited to indoor activities due to the pouring rain. I made a quick run outside during a break in the rain drops to grab an oak leaf. I tossed the leaf into a cake pan and froze it into a block of ice in the freezer. Later I took the block of ice and set it up onto the window ledge to photograph. Next to Turn

This week started the official change in fall colors with the Big Leaf Maples just starting to change color.The poison oak while beautiful in color really doesn't count. After being beat up by Angela during my work out this morning I decided to stop and shoot a few leaves along the way home. There is one Big Leaf maple on my route to town that has been catching my eye so I finally decide to stop and create a few images from it. Here is the result. I'd love to hear what you think of it.
